And to have fun

Nursery

Crestwood provides a fully staffed Nursery for children from Birth through Two Years Old during all services and special events. We have new staff, Whitney Mattingly and Maggie Smith, who are both well qualified with experience in childcare settings.  Our Nursery is located in the South Wing, on the side of the church across from Glendover School. All infants and toddlers check-in and check-out through the same door. We also utilize a computerized check-in system. We have a large room devoted to creative play and a small darkened room for napping. The rooms are connected by a small bathroom which allows for constant supervision at the highest level.

On Sunday mornings, we offer childcare beginning with the 8:30 Worship Service. During the Sunday school hour, staff engages our toddlers in a lesson from Living the Good News curriculum to begin their spiritual education. Games, play and music are offered during the 10:45 Worship Service.

In case of emergency or uncontrolled behavior, all parents are provided a paging number. During the Worship services, these numbers will appear on a small screen on the right side of the sanctuary to notify parents they need to return to the Nursery.

Sunday School Overview

Sunday school, each Sunday morning at 9:30, is a time all our children learn about God. Toddlers and Preschoolers use the Grow curriculum to learn God’s stories through songs, art and stories. Our toddlers are led through the materials by our Nursery Staff. Preschoolers are once again led by experienced teachers Fanny Hughes and Meg Shake.

Our children Kindergarten-Fifth Grade go in depth with Bible stories through Potter’s Publishing’s Creative Curriculum for Workshop Model Sunday School and Multidimensional Learning. Rotation Model is based on the Multiple Intelligence Theory, that we learn best though multiple ways. Explorers (K-2) and Discoverers (3-5) spend six weeks engaged with a Bible story through Crafts, Computer/Non-computer, Cooking, Drama, Games and Library/Video.

September 16 – October 14 – Elisha

October 21-November 18 – Joshua

November 25-December 30 – Christ Revealed

January 6 – February 10 – Teach Me to Pray

Children’s Worship

Crestwood welcomes families to attend our worship services together. At both our 8:30 and 10:45 services, children participate as Acolytes, lighting the Christ Candle.

We offer the following special programs for children attending worship at Crestwood:

Worship Bags are for children staying for the full service. Worship Bags include crafts, special bulletins, and treats. Although some Worship Bags have been personalized, there are enough for everyone to take one. You will find Worship Bags at both entrances to the Sanctuary. We ask you return the bag when the service is over.

Children Worship and Wonder is offered during the 10:45 service for all children ages 3-3rd grade. Children Worship and Wonder is based on theology that children have a relationship with God from a very young age. We do not “teach,” but rather “share,” God’s stories. We have a full worship service including songs of praise, Bible stories, response, feast and farewell blessing. After the Children’s Moment, children are taken by Greeters from the sanctuary to one of two worship spaces in the South Wing. Lambs, children age 3-Kindergarten, meet in the center room to hear stories from Young Children and Worship; they exit from a clearly marked door near the breezeway. Lions, children in the 1st or 2nd grade, worship in a newly renovated room beside the courtyard. They hear stories from Following Jesus. You may pick them up at the exit door in the center of the hallway.

Children’s Music

All our children are encouraged to participate in our music programs. We believe music is an important way to praise God and to celebrate our faith. We want our children to explore their faith and to grow spiritually with music. While performance is a component, we focus on the process and the fellowship of participating in a musical group.

Preschoolers sing in the Cherub Choir, led by Ms. Martha and meeting during the first twenty minutes of Sunday school. Throughout the year, the Cherub Choir performs during Worship and special events.

The Angel Choir, for children from Kindergarten-Fifth Grade, is led by Dr. Noemi Lugo, a Professor of Voice at the University of Kentucky. The Angel Choir practices weekly at 4 p.m., the start of our Youth Group. Children in the Angel Choir use bells and other instruments to enhance their vocal performance. Like the Cherub Choir, they perform throughout the year in Worship and special events.
